THENGA PUTTU
Thenga puttu is one among the common breakfast recipe in Nagercoil region.It is prepared by grinding the idli rice,urad dal and fenugreek. Main thing we have to concentrate on this recipe is the batter consistency.Grind the soaked urad dal and fenugreek well using very little water,until it is smooth and flufffy.Then grind the soaked rice by sprinkling some water.
The grounded rice batter should be little coarsely not much and the consistency should be very thick.There is no need to ferment the batter.Once done preparing the batter,start making the thenga puttu by steaming in a idli pot.You can relish this dish with sugar and idli milagai podi.I learn't this recipe from my mom.Please do try this healthy recipe and let me know how it turns out to you.Now let's check out the recipe....
GRINDING TIME:1 hour
PREPARATION TIME:20 min
COOKING TIME:5 min
INGREDIENTS:
Idle rice / pulungal arisi - 3 cup
Urad dal - 3/4 cup
Fenugreek - 1/4 cup
Grated coconut - 1 cup
Salt
Water
PICTORIAL:
Take 3 cup idli rice and soak over night
Take 3/4 th cup urad dal and soak over night
Take 1/4 cup fenugreek and soak over night
Grind the soaked urad dal and fenugreek,using very little water
Grind until it is smooth and fluffy,consistency of the batter should be thick
Grounded thick urad dal batter
Grind the soaked rice
Add required salt
Use very little water to grind the batter
Grind little coarsely not much,consistency of the batter should be thick.
Grounded urad dal and rice batter
Mix until both the batter combined well,no need to ferment it.
Spread clean muslin cloth on the idle plate and spread some grated coconut
Take small amount from the batter,
drop it in the idle plate

Springle some grated coconut on it
Place it inside the idle pot
Steam it
After 5 min it is perfectly done
Soft and spongy thenga puttu is ready.
METHOD:
- Soak the rice,urad dal and fenugreek for over night.
- Grind the soaked urad dal and fenugreek using little water until it is smooth and fluffy and keep aside.The consistency of the batter should be thick and keep aside.
- Coarsely grind the soaked rice using very little water and required salt.The consistency of the batter should be very thick and keep aside.
- Mix both the urad dal and rice batter until it is combined well,no need to ferment the batter.
- Spread the clean white muslin cloth on the idle plate,add some grated coconut.Take small portion from the batter and drop it in the idli plate till it is filled,spread some grated coconut on it.
- Steam it using a idli pot,until it is completely cooked.After 5 min it is perfectly done.Now take it out and transfer it into a plate.
- Soft and spongy thenga puttu is ready.
