MUNTHIRI KOTHU
Munthiri kothu is a traditional sweets from Nagercoil, Tirunelveli and Kerala.It is a sweet recipe made with roasted moong dal/ siruparupu,roasted sesame seeds,roasted coconut and palm jaggery as inner filling,the rice flour batter for outer thin covering.Munthiri means grapes in Malayalam,as they are deep fried in bunches they are called as kothu.
PREPARATION TIME:15 min
COOKING TIME:30 min
INGREDIENTS:
For inner filling:
Moong dal/siru parupu -1 cup
Sesame seeds - 2tblspn
Grated coconut - 1 cup
Palm Jaggery - 150 gm
Rice flour - 2 tblspn
For outer covering:
Rice flour - 2 tblspn
Turmeric powder - 1/2 tblspn
Water
Salt
PICTORIAL:
Add roasted moong dal/siru parupu in a mixer
Make equal sized ball out of this mixture and keep it aside for 1 day,otherwise it will broken down easily while frying
METHOD:
- Heat a pan add 1 cup moong dal,fry at low flame until raw smell are gone and keep aside.
- In the same pan add 1 cup grated coconut,fry at low flame until water in the coconut dries and keep aside.
- Take a pan add 1/2 cup water,then add 150 gm palm jaggery melts at low flame and keep aside.
- Add roasted moong dal in amixer and grind coarsely.
- In a bowl add corsely grinded moong dal,2 tblspn roasted sesame seeds,2 tblspn rice flour and 1/4 cup melted palm jaggery syrup and mix well.
- Make equal sized balls out of the mixture.To prevent broke down while roasting close it and rest for 1 day.
- Next day, in a bowl add 2 tblspn rice flour,1/2 tblspn turmeric powder,salt and water.Mix well to make lump free batter.
- Take a ball and dip it in the rice flour batter and coat well.Drop the balls in hot oil.
- Deep fry it medium flame,stir occasionally and cook both sides unitl it golden.
- Delicious munthiri kothu is ready.
