PUMPKIN AND RAW BANANA KOOTU CURRY 



            Pumpkin and raw banana kootu curry is one of the popular recipe in Nagercoil region.The flavours of the vegetables balanced with coconut mixture and the seasoned pepper powder enhances the taste of the recipe.

SERVING:4

INGREDIENTS:

Pumpkin - 200 gm
Raw banana - 1
Turmeric powder - 2 tspn(I use virali manjal)
Pepper -1/2 tblspn
Shallot - 5
Cumin - 1/4 tblspn
Grated coconut - 1 cup
Coconut oil - 1 tblspn
Mustard 1/2 tblspn
Curry leaves - 1 string
Urad dal - 1/4 tblspn
Pepper powder - 1 tspn
Water  as required
Salt as required

PICTORIAL:


Add small piece of virali manjal in a grind stone and grind well


Add 1/2 tblspn pepper


Add 4 shallots


Crushed well


In a earthernware pot add 3 cups of  water


Add chopped raw banana


Add chopped pumpkins


Add crushed shallot mixture


Add required salt


Close the lid and cook until vegetables cooked


Add small piece of virali manjal in a grindstone


Add 2 red chillies


Grind well into a smooth paste


Add 3/4 cup grated coconut


Grind little coarsely


Add 1 shallot


Add 1/4 tblspn cumin


Crushed it


Mix it with coconut mixture


Heat a kadai with 1 tblspn oil


Add 1/2 tblspn mustard


After mustard splutters add curry leaves


Add 1/4 tblspn urad dal



Saute well


Add 1 spoon grated coconut 


Fry until it is golden brown in colour


After few minutes,vegetables cooked well


Add coarsely grinded coconut mixture


Add 100 ml water


Add roasted coconut mixture


Mix well


Wait to boil,cook until raw smell of the ingredients are gone


Add 1 tspn pepper powder,mix well and cook for 1 min


Yummy and tasty pumpkin and raw banana kootu curry is ready

METHOD:

  • Crush a small piece of virali manjal(or use turmeric powder),1/2 tblspn pepper and 4 shallots using a mortar and pestle or grindstone.
  • In a earthenware pot add 3 cups of water,1 chopped raw banana,200 gm chopped pumpkin,crushed shallot mixture and salt.Close the lid and cook until the vegetables cooked.
  • Grind small piece of virali manjal and 2 red chillies in a grindstone.Then add 1 cup grated coonut grind little coarsely.Crush 1 shallot and 1/4 tblspn cumin,mix it with the coconut mixture and keep aside.
  • Heat a kadai with 1 tblspn oil.Add 1/2 tblspn mustard after it splutters add 1/4 tblspn urad dal and curry leaves.Add 1 spoon of grated coconut,fry until it is golden brown in colour and keep aside.
  • After few minutes,vegetables cooked well.Add 100 ml water now add grounded coconut mixture,roasted coconut mixture.Mix well and wait to boil.
  • After few minutes the raw smell of the spices are gone,smells aromatic,add 1 tspn pepper powder and mix well cook for 1 more minutes.Now switch off the flame.
  • Tasty pumpkin and raw banana kootu curry is ready.
