RAW JACK FRUIT KOOTU CURRY
Raw jack fruit or Chakka kootu curry is a most popular dish in Nagercoil region during pongal festival,that time only we can get so many yam varities.During pongal day,in Tamil it is 'Thai thirunal', it is a must have side dish in our lunch.
Cut the raw jack fruit and remove the pods and seeds.Then chopped the pods into two halves.Remove the white shell from the seeds then use it for cooking.Cook all vegetables along with the seasoning ingredients,grounded coconut mixture and the roasted coconut mixture.I learn't this recipe from my mom,please do try this recipe.Now let's check out the recipe....

INGREDIENTS:
Raw jack fruit - 2 handful
Jack fruit seeds- 1 handful
Yam / Kaachi kizhangu - 50 gm
Nenthran raw banana- 1/2
Monthan raw banana- 1
Pumpkin - 75 gm
Water - 5 cups
FOR GRINDING:
Pepper - 1 t blspn
Shallots - 8
Cumin - 1/2 tblspn
Grated coconut - 1 cup
Virali manjal / Turmeric - small pieces
Red chillies - 3
FOR ROASTING:
Oil - 1 tblspn
Mustard - 1/2 tblspn
Urad dal - 1/4 tblspn
Curry leaves - 2 sprig
Grated coconut - 1/2 cup
Salt as required
PICTORIAL:
Take 2 handful of raw jack fruit and 1 handful of jack fruit seeds
Take 50 gm of yam/kaachi kizhangu.Peel the skin and chopped roughly
Take nenthran raw banana and chopped roughly
Take monthan raw banana and chopped roughly
Take 50 gm pumpkin
Heat 4 cups of water in a earthenware pot
Add 50 gm roughly chopped yam( kaachi kizhangu in Tamil )
Add 1 roughly chopped monthan raw banana
Add 1/2 roughly chopped nenthran banana
Add 75 gm chopped pumpkin
Add 1 handful of jack fruit seeds
Add 2 handful of raw jack fruit
Close the lid and cook
In a grind stone add a small piece of turmeric,I use virali manjal
Add 1 tblspn pepper
Add 5 shallots and grind coarsely
Coarsely grounded pepper and shallot mixture
Add it to the vegetable mixture
Add required salt
Close the lid and cook
In a grind stone add a piece of turmeric
Add 3 red chillies and grind well
Add 1 cup of grated coconut
Grind coarsely
Add 1/2 tblspn cumin seed
Add 3 shallots and grind coarsely
Coarsely grounded coconut mixture
Heat a tblspn of oil in a kadai
Add 1/2 tblspn mustard
After it splutters,add 1/4 tblspn urad dal
Add 2 sprig of curry leaves
Add 1/2 cup of grated coconut
Fry until it is brown in colour
After few minutes,yam cooked
Add roasted coconut mixture
Add coarsely grounded coconut mixture
Mix well
Add 200 ml water
Cook for 4 min and switch off the flame
Tasty chakka kootu curry is ready
METHOD:
- Heat 4 cups of water in a earthenware pot.
- Add 2 handful of chopped dry jack fruit,1 handful of jack fruit seeds,50 gm roughly chopped yam(kaachi kizhangu in Tamil), 1/2 roughly chopped nenthran raw banana,1 roughly chopped monthen raw banana,75 gm chopped pumpkin.Close the lid and cook.
- Add small piece of virali manjal(turmeric),1 tblspn pepper and 5 shallots in a grind stone,grind coarsely and add this to the earthenware pot.Add required salt,close the lid and cook.
- Add small piece of virali manjal(turmeric),2 red chillies,1 cup grated coconut,1/2 tblspn cumin and 2 shallots,grind coarsely and keep aside.
- Heat a tblspn oil in kadai,add 1/2 tblspn mastard after it splutters add 1/4 tblspn urad dal,2 sprig curry leaves and 1/2 cup of grated coconut.fry until it is brown in colour.
- After few minutes,yam cooked add coarsely grounded coconut mixture,roasted coconut coconut mixture and 200 ml water,mix well and cook for few minutes.
- After 4 min it is slightly thickened,now switch off the flame.Tasty chakka kootu curry is ready.
