 ELEPHANT FOOT YAM KOOTU


                   In South India especially in Kerala,tuber has been a part of people's diet.In Tamil it is called as senaikizhangu or chenai kizhangu,in English it is elephant foot yam.Today we will see how to prepare senai paruppu kootu with the following easy steps.Cook the yam along with parboiled toor dal and shallots, and then cooked in freshly grounded seasoning ingredients and coarsely grounded coconut mixture.Finally add tempering to the kootu.This kootu or curry preparation is a common  side dish for lunch served with steamed rice.I learn't this recipe from my mom,do try this recipe and if you like it share this with your friends and relatives.Now let's check out the recipe...


PREPARATION TIME:30 min

COOKING TIME:35 min

INGREDIENTS:

Elephant foot yam / senai kizhangu - 250 g
Toor dal - 1/2 cup
Shallots - 20 (cut it into half)
Virali manjal / turmeric - small piece
Dried red chillies - 2
Grated coconut - 1/2 cup
Cumin - 1/2 tspn
Water - 2 and 3/4 cup
Salt
Coconut oil - 1 tblspn
Mustard - 1/2 tspn
Curry leaves - 1 sprig

PICTORIAL:

In a earthenware vessel,add 1/2 cup cleaned and washed toor dal and 2 and 1/2 cup water.Cook until toor dal is 3/4th parboiled.


Add 20 shallots (cut it into half)


Add 250 g chopped yam,mix well.


Close the lid and cook


In a grind stone add small piece of virali manjal


Add 2 dried red chillies,grind well


Add 1/2 cup grated coconut,grind little coarsely


Add 2 shallots and 1/2 tspn cumin,grind little coarsely


Coarsely grounded coconut and shallot mixture


Yam cooked well


Add coarsely grounded coconut and shallot mixture



Add 1/4 cup water


Add required salt and mix well


Wait to boil


Cook for 1 min and switch off the flame


Heat a tblspn of coconut oil in a kadai


Add 1/2 tspn mustard


After it splutters,add 1 sprig curry leaves and saute well


Add it to the yam kootu


Tasty elephant yam and toor dal kootu is ready.

METHOD:

  • Peel the skin and chopped the yam into small cubes.
  • In a earthenware vessel add 1/2 cup toor dal and 2 and 1/2 cup water,cook until it is 3/4th parboiled.
  • Then add 250g chopped yam and 20 shallots (cut it into half),close the lid and cook until it is cooked well.
  • In a grind stone dd small piece of virali manjal and 2 dried red chillies,grind well.Add 1/2 cup grated coconut,1/2 tspn cumin and 2 shallots,grind little coarsely.
  • After few min,yam cooked well.Add coarsely grounded coconut and shallot  mixture,50 ml water and required salt.Wait to boil and then cook for 1 min.
  • Heat a tblspn of oil in a kadai,add 1/2 tspn mustasrd after it splutters add 1 sprig curry leaves,saute well and add it to the kootu.
  • Tasty yam and toor dal kootu / senai paruppu kootu is ready.
